For Patients & Visitors

Patient Rights & Privacy

Every patient at Balm Oyster Medical is entitled to the same standard of dignity, information, and privacy — regardless of location, diagnosis, or how they're paying for care.

As a patient, you have the right to:

  • Receive care delivered with dignity, respect, and without discrimination.
  • Be given clear, understandable information about your diagnosis, treatment options, and their risks — in your preferred language, with interpretation support if needed.
  • Participate in decisions about your own care, including the right to seek a second opinion.
  • Refuse any treatment, to the extent permitted by law, after being informed of the consequences of that decision.
  • Have your medical information kept confidential and accessed only by those directly involved in your care, except where you've consented otherwise or law requires disclosure.
  • Review your own medical record and request corrections to factual errors.
  • Receive a clear explanation of charges related to your care.
  • Raise a concern or complaint about your care without fear that it will affect the quality of treatment you receive.

As a patient, you also share responsibility for:

  • Providing accurate and complete information about your health history, medications, and symptoms to the best of your knowledge.
  • Asking questions when instructions, a diagnosis, or a treatment plan aren't clear, rather than guessing.
  • Following the treatment plan you've agreed to, or telling your care team promptly if you're unable or unwilling to follow it.
  • Informing staff of any change in your condition, and disclosing any other care you're receiving elsewhere that may be relevant.
  • Treating staff, other patients, and visitors with the same respect and dignity you're entitled to receive.
  • Understanding and meeting your financial obligations related to billing and insurance, and raising concerns about them early.
  • Following the visiting and safety guidelines in place at the location where you're being treated.

How We Protect Your Privacy

Your health information is accessed only by clinicians and staff directly involved in your care, or as required for billing, quality review, or legal compliance. We do not share identifiable health information with third parties for marketing purposes, ever.

Because we operate across multiple countries, the specific privacy regulations that apply can vary by location (including PHIPA in Canada, UK GDPR, and equivalent frameworks elsewhere). Our full data-handling practices, including how to access, correct, or request deletion of your information, are detailed in our Privacy Policy.

Have a Concern?

If you believe your rights as a patient haven't been respected, please raise it with your care team in the first instance, or contact our Patient Relations team directly at contact@balmoystermedical.com. Every concern is taken seriously, reviewed promptly, and will not affect the quality of care you receive.

For concerns specifically about how your personal or health information has been handled, you can also reach our Group Data Protection Officer, Helena Marsh, at privacy@balmoystermedical.com.
